Snow Shovelling Activities

Snow activities like snow shovelling are very popular in winter. Participants Safety should not be overlooked. Though Snow Shovelling is mainly a winter activity it can either be taken as a sport or as an essential activity. It becomes a necessary activity when weather or festival need requires it like for Christmas Santa’s sleigh ride. Most common activities on snow are mainly sport related and are common to all ages but survival ones are more appropriate for adults. Snow activities range from snowball fights and games, making snowman, skating, snowboarding, skiing, and over Christmas possibly Santa Claus very own sleigh games.

Amongst the dangers associated with snow, there lies a big risk associated with snow shovelling. Most people tend to overlook the risk mobilising can bring about. On surface, snow appears harmless. The problem is created by this assumption and a would be participant may end up in hospital. A ground of snow may on surface appear fluffy but beneath it maybe solid ice and hence very dangerous. Continuous mobilising activity will cause excessive strain on the muscles, however this may not be a big problem for those who do heavy exercise regularly. The most common problem relates to strain to chest muscles. This makes snow activities extremely dangerous especially to people with an underlying medical problem like heart disease, high blood pressure and also those with respiratory system problems.

To be safe in carrying out this activity, its important to have the right tools/snow survival kit. This includes stable tools or equipments which are well maintained. Most importantly decide whether activity is really necessary necessary, if so do risk assessment first. Other alternatives should be be sought first as snow related activity can indeed be dangerous activity. Avoid activities you are not familiar with unless you have some supervision . This is because the snow may slide as a huge block which is out of control and may fall on those nearby. Ice safety need to be addressed when give way blocks leave you you helpless . Its important to be aware of other dangers like frostbite. Proper attire ought to be worn, preferably made from wool, and waterproof or something similar. Where young ones are involved, a responsible adult should supervise the activity. Signs of possible extreme cold would be a flushed face, red nose, and possibly runny nose. If this is observed, participants should take a break and go indoors for warm up.

Where actual medical emergency arises, appropriate action should be taken. Adults maybe reluctant to take a break especially when they experience chest pain. This may be pain caused by the strain of the snow shoveling activity. It maybe an onset of heart related chest pain. It’s adviserble to call your GP if possible l an ambulance. Other possible problems relate to falls on slippery surface. A fracture maybe sustained. In such instances its adversible to wait for medical assistance. Unless you have the know how and imobilising appliances, do not attempt to move.

Beginner hikers sometimes overlook two simple facts about hiking clothing for warmth. First is that hiking clothing is not primarily designed to keep the cold out but to keep the heat in from the only source of heat i.e. yourself.

Second is that when you are wearing hiking clothing for warmth, you are not trying to be as warm as possible but to reach a thermal equilibrium i.e. a state in which your heat production roughly balances your heat loss so that you remain within your comfort zone whether you are on the move, on the move and sweating, sitting still and sitting still and sweating.

To achieve this thermal equilibrium under changing conditions your hiking clothing has to be versatile. Of course you can make adjustments to your hiking clothing by taking off layers when it gets too hot and putting more on when it gets cold but in most cases it’s both inconvenient and impractical.

The hiking clothing you use needs to be able to handle all the different situations, whether on the move or sitting still, at the same time. They need to be able keep the still and dry air to insulate you, keeping you warm and when you’re moving allow the vapor of your sweat to pass through and escape to keep you cool.

If your hiking clothing absorbs some of the moisture so that when you sweat heavily it remains damp, they lose the ability to keep you warm as it has lost its ability to hold dry air which acts as an insulating layer and at the same time your body will continue to draw latent heat from your body needed to turn the sweat into vapor.

The result is that you suffer from what is called the after-exercise chill. Experiments have shown that with an absorptive material the chill can last for about two hours but with a non-absorptive material like fibre-pile the chill is negligible.

The Three-Layer Hiking Clothing System

The ability to prevent after-exercise chill so well is what makes the three-layer hiking clothing system so popular. It’s a proven way to ensure your comfort outdoors. Each of the three layers have different functions that work together to cope with the different conditions.

The First Layer

Moisture management is the main function of the first layer. Some experts call it the next-to-the skin layer. It keeps you cool in the summer and keeps you warm in winter by keeping you dry.

Made of some sort of polypropylene or other synthetic fabrics, the fabric ‘wicks’ away the moisture from the skin very rapidly by capillary action dispersing it to the outer surface where it can evaporate.

The Second Layer

The second layer or middle layer of hiking clothing is the insulating layer. Their main function is to trap air, which is a good heat insulator, so you retain warmth.

This layer is made of natural fibers or fleece. Both are reliable in keeping you warm but natural fibers have a more efficient warmth-to-weight ratio and are highly compressible. Its drawback is that it has to be kept dry to maintain its ability to retain warmth.

Hiking clothing made from fleece are lightweight, breathable and insulate even when wet. They also dry faster and the warmth-to-weight ratio is even higher than wool. Fleece is very popular with many experienced backpackers I know of even when it is not as compressible as natural fibers.

The Third Layer

The third layer is the waterproof shell that both acts as a windbreaker and a rain jacket. If the outer layer doesn’t do what it’s supposed you’ll end up losing a lot of heat as the wind and penetrate into the inner layers.

It is usually made of Gore-Tex that also offers breathability. This layer of hiking clothing needs to have proper ventilation or else perspiration can’t evaporate but instead condenses on the inside of your shell.

Animals are free to roam with optimum safety measures. It is greatly enjoyed by thousands of visitors including school children, families and animal lovers.

Surrounded by water catchment areas, the tropical heat of Singapore becomes much milder here. There can be occasional afternoon showers so bring an umbrella along.

The management has done such a great job of preventing mosquito breeding, you will be unlikely getting insects’ bites. A common concern many visitors have in tropical places like Singapore and other countries in Southeast Asia.

Visit early in the morning and catch a Jungle Breakfast with the animals. Feel free to roam about or catch Animal Shows available at different timings. You can easily spend half a day here and the best time to come is in the morning, followed by a rain forest alfresco lunch.

Southeast Asian Apes are endangered animal with its natural habitat at South East Asia. At present, Singapore Zoo houses the largest number of these apes in the world. The first ape was rescued from an illegal keeper and she found a new home here. She became a national icon and well loved by every Singaporean. She passed away in year 2008 and left behind two sons, two daughters and six grandchildren. To commemorate her, the zoo intensifies its conversation effort of the endangered animals. In fact, there has been numerous animal conversation projects and efforts such as breeding programs and public education promoting greater awareness in wildlife and environmental issues.

Another close by feature opens daily from 6pm till midnight is Night Safari, located in the northern part of Singapore. It houses species of animals active in the night.

Taking a tour to Tangalooma can be a great side trip for your Brisbane or Gold Coast holiday. Whether you go for a day or stay longer there is plenty to capture the imagination and heart at this truly stunning location. If you plan a Tangalooma tour from the Gold Coast you can be back by dinner! It’s not one of those tours where you are cooped up inside all day, be prepared for plenty of fresh air!

Tangalooma is on Moreton Island and is usually reached by boat. The most common way to get to there is on the Tangalooma Island Resort Launch which leaves daily from a wharf on the Brisbane River close to Brisbane Airport.

The launch takes about 75 minutes across Moreton Bay. Using the resort launch is great guest that are staying over because the resort organises your luggage to be taken directly to your accommodation.

The same launch is used for those going on a Tangalooma day tour. The day tours or day cruises usually leave the wharf at about 10am getting into Tangalooma by about 11.15am. The return launch is at 4pm which gives daytrippers plenty of time to explore the resort, enjoy the breathtaking scenery and possibly even take up one of the other Tangalooma tours on offer such as whale watching in winter or the Dugong Eco Cruise which sets off in search of the famous Moreton Bay dugongs that feed on the seagrass.

If you plan a longer trip and stay over at the resort you may also participate in the famous wild dolphin feeding that goes on nightly all year. A pod of local wild dolphins come in for feeding and interaction with the locals. This is best enjoyed with an overnight stay.

Tangalooma Resort also offers other adventures for visitors such as:

You may not think that eating on your patio is a picnic, but anytime you eat outside, by definition, you are picnicking. If you decide to eat the lunch you brought to work in the park on a nice day, you are having a picnic lunch.

Some picnics can take quite a bit of planning, such as an out door wedding reception, while others might be as simple as feeding the kids lunch as they sit on a picnic blanket in their back yard.

When I was a kid my grandma used to pack a picnic basket and we would go to Lake Michigan during the summer. Grandma would not take off her sensible black shoes as we walked across the sand. After spreading the blanket she would sit and watch me splash in the water and make sand castles. There always seemed to be other kids around when we had our picnic lunch and Grandma always had enough sandwiches for everybody.

If it rained my grandma would still pack a basket and we would eat on our covered front porch and play cards. If my friend from across the street came over she would share our lunch and play cards with us. The great thing about picnics is that they are flexible and adaptable to any type of weather throughout the year.

Most Sunday afternoons in the summer our family would go swimming or to a wayside area where there was enough room for my father and brothers to hit a baseball without worrying about breaking our neighbors windows. In the fall we liked to hike though one of the state parks in the splendor of red and gold leaves.

Wherever we went, Mother never packed food we would not have eaten had we been home. It just tasted better and it was more fun to play, eat when we were hungry, and play or explore some more.

My mother emptied the ice trays to pack ice around the food in her open wicker picnic basket so it would not spoil on hot summer days. Keeping food cool is not a problem today with insulated picnic baskets, backpacks and totes.

While Memorial Day is the traditional kick off to the summer outdoor grilling season and Labor Day the end, the picnic season actually goes on all year long and not just in warmer climates.

There are as many tailgating picnics in the northern states during football season, college and pro, as in the warmer southern states. Delicious smells and billowing smoke rise above the parking lots where fans are grilling their favorite foods and enjoying the camaraderie.

In the winter it has to be cold enough before people can stake out their place on a frozen lake, cut a hole in the ice and fish. A lot of the fun comes from sharing picnic food and beverages with friends while waiting for the fish to bite.

Picnic are for all seasons and all occasions from simple to elegant, impromptu to planned. There is always another picnic to look forward to anytime of the year.
